Amendment 1. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued a decision that the Westboro Baptist Church was within their rights to protest at military funerals.

While I sincerely believe that Westboro’s protesting is WRONG and the reasoning behind the protests is VERY Wrong, I have to support the decision that was reached.

Had the Court ruled against them, it would be very simple to rule over and over that any unpopular cause was also not allowed to express their ideas or assemble to show support for that cause.

While I am personally affronted at the displays of irreverance and insensitivity of these demonstrations, they, and others, are given this privilege by our Constitution. The Court upheld the Constitution, the basis of our Country.

We too have the right of Free Speech and Peaceful Assembly, let’s go out and support our fallen, forming lines the opposition cannot cross.

I am sure our Founding Fathers are dizzy in the grave these days!
