Izzy came by this morning, no doubt prompted by hot coffee, biscuits and cheese omelets…

He shook  a few icy crystals off his old denim jacket and pulled up a chair to chat. We mentioned a trip yesterday to the Feed and Seed, approving the purchase of Straight 8 cucumbers and blue lake pole bean seed for the soon to be garden.  Like me, he prefers pole beans to bush beans.

He’s not so sure about my plan to order chocolate tomatoes, but did agree that the old heirloom varieties are much more ‘tomato-y’ than most of the hybrids we can get.

When we raised our fears about the freezing rain and sleet falling with all the fruit trees in full bloom, he told us not to worry! He  says that the ice will protect the blooms and as long as the petals don’t get beat off by the sleet pellets,  they will all be fine.

Sometimes, I wonder about Izzy’s knowledge, but he is rarely wrong about these things.  I will wait and see what happens to the plums and peaches. As loaded as they are with blossoms, I guess it won’t hurt to lose some…
